So what inpires you to write?

I always have, as long as I can remember, I kept diaries and journals. My own journey through life was accompanied by the written word. I became bolder when my feelings about the world were just too deep to fit into a Monday 14th September  Writing was a solace, a place i could go to deal with difficult feelings. When my own personal sorrow aligned with some tragic world event I found myself able to grieve through writing a poem about it. Now I find that it is useful to translate my challenges into a heroine’s tale. Somehow inside of writing a song I find the healing, the wisdom and the power to move through it. It’s like wandering through tunnels of insight until I finally see the light and find my way back to myself.

You talk a lot about shadow. What do you mean by that?

Aah I’m really interested in shadow work. It’s a way of self-healing that I discovered after a difficult time in my life which resulted in nightmares and ongoing mental health issues and lack of stability. It was a term that Carl Jung created to describe the parts of ourselves that we learned to hide away as children, thinking they are unacceptable to the world. When we find them again as wise adults and re-parent them we find that they hold some of our greatest gifts.

It’s amazing how many people were told they can’t sing so they should shut up. Daring to release our voice is often one of the most powerful ways to reclaim something beautiful that has been locked away. This has been a big journey for me. My voice is inextricably linked in with my sense of self-discovery.

What would you say to other people who were thinking that they would like to write songs?

Get yourself out of the way! It sounds ironic as all of my songs are ultimately about me wrapped up in a story – all dreams are the same apparently! If you can allow yourself to be open to whatever comes through, to listen to the voice inside that usually is busy telling us we are not good enough or we must work harder – that voice, give it space to tell a different story, listen….it’s there, just waiting to be heard. It may not make sense, but just let it come, let the words spill out onto the page. Eventually words will line up, ready to fall out of you in a coherent way, but at first you might judge them and even find them uncomfortable…allow it all. There is no rush. Let yourself be used by the muse. She has so much to say and there are people that need to hear you say it.. And the voice… it is yours, unique like a finger print. The main thing that will hold our voices back from opening into power is our timidity, judgement and expexctation. It takes a while to train a voice. Keep singing, in the car, shower, on the hills, in tunnels…I really believe we can all learn to sing when we get our heads out of the way and feel the feels.

So how are you feeling about this new musical project West of Wingtree?

I’m really proud of it. It somehow encapsulates the landscape of my inner world and I realize that actually I have not been alone in there, there are many people that can relate on a deeper level than words, who have somehow inhabited it too, not least the amazing musicians and producers and creative people I have been working with. I feel understood. Finally. I think i can be at peace with this melancholic part of myself who used to disappear into my lonely otherworld. It is a part of us whether we admit it or not. That realization is very healing.

What next for Oshi Luna?

Well, I am looking forward to releasing my next single on May 1/12th. My 4 track EP is coming out at midsummer and I will be getting out and about to various festivals and events start sharing it. I am integrating more of my music into the “Divining Shadows” workshops that are scheduled for the next few months. I’ll also be getting to grips with the possibilities of using social media, being comfortable behind the camera and learning the ropes in the new studio. I am writing some songs for release in the autumn and have a few interesting collaborations in the pipeline. I have alot of energy for this and the release of Shadow Child has really opened the door for me to step out there and enjoy the journey.

With her signature blend of emotional honesty and poetic depth, Oshi’s music creates a space for reflection, connection, and hope.

What was your last insight?

I realized that i could let go of the battle against feeling misunderstood. It’s none of my business There is a great freedom in that.. I saw how I was being defensive, over-thinking and over-explaining because I was so afraid of being misunderstood. I could take a punishment that was a fair consequence of something I knew was wrong…but the ones that were meted out when someone else didn’t want to understand my innocence in the matter always grieved me. My inner child is always quick to complain when something is “not fair!”

Have you written a song about that?

Several! They usually have a story and a play on words, a way to make it fun and I get to come out winning in the end in with some kind of anthemic victory!

I wouldn’t necessarily describe your music as “fun” what is the difference between those songs and the music that you are releasing as Oshi Luna?

Oshi Luna is one step removed from my personal journey, she lives in the ethereal realms, a dream journey. The songs are often channelled, responses to times of deep reflection about an issue that i am having in my life, or a more general realization that is coming through around my own shadow and how it holds me back and yet the imagery is woven through with the natural world, symbols and ritual.
